Post-Extraction Care

Caring for Your Mouth After Tooth Extractions: Promoting Healing and Preventing Complications

Proper care after tooth extractions is crucial for promoting healing, preventing complications, and ensuring a smooth recovery process. Whether you've had a wisdom tooth removed or a tooth extracted due to decay or injury, following these post-extraction guidelines will help protect the extraction site and maintain overall oral health.

1. Follow Your Dentist's Instructions: Your dentist will provide specific instructions tailored to your situation. Listen carefully and follow their advice regarding medication, pain management, and any dietary restrictions.

2. Apply Gentle Pressure: After the extraction, bite down on a clean gauze pad placed over the extraction site. Applying gentle pressure helps control bleeding and encourages blood clot formation. Change the gauze pad as needed, typically every 30 to 45 minutes, until bleeding subsides.

3. Manage Pain and Swelling: Some discomfort and swelling are common after a tooth extraction. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers. Applying an ice pack or cold compress to the cheek near the extraction site can help reduce swelling during the first 24 hours.

4. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing infection and promoting healing. However, be careful around the extraction site. Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the extraction area for the first 24 hours. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in 250ml warm water) after 24 hours, repeating several times a day to keep the area clean.

5. Avoid Disturbing the Blood Clot: It is crucial not to disturb the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket, as it plays a vital role in healing. Avoid rinsing your mouth forcefully, spitting, using a straw, or smoking for at least 24 hours. These actions can dislodge the clot, leading to a condition known as dry socket, which can be painful and delay healing.

6. Eat Soft Foods: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days after the extraction. Opt for foods like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup. Avoid hot, spicy, chewy, or crunchy foods that can irritate the extraction site or get stuck in the socket.

7. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using a straw, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot. Choose room temperature or cold beverages and avoid hot drinks for the first 24 hours.

8. Rest and Avoid Strenuous Activities: Allow your body to rest and recover after the extraction. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours to minimize bleeding and swelling.

9. Be Aware of Signs of Complications: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection or complications, such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, persistent swelling, fever, or a foul odour or taste in your mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your dentist promptly.

10. Attend Follow-Up Appointments: It's crucial to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist. They will assess the healing progress, remove stitches if necessary, and provide further guidance on maintaining oral health.

Remember, each person's recovery may vary, and it's essential to consult your dentist for specific post-extraction care instructions. By following these general guidelines and seeking professional advice when needed, you can ensure a smooth recovery and optimal oral health after tooth extractions.
